Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has worked with city police to pilot the project Saarathi (systematic enhanced radial traffic & hoop guidance) to enhance traffic restrictions and public safety in port cities. The project, first implemented at several important junctions, shows promising results. GVMC is currently planning to expand its initiative to 50 major junctions in the city. Proposal Requests (RFPs) will soon float for full-scale implementations. The initiative includes a variety of smart traffic management solutions, including signal synchronization, facial recognition systems, automatic license plate recognition, and red lighting violation detection.Officials say preparations for a detailed project report are currently underway. The Intelligent Traffic Management System Pilot Project was implemented in various locations in Visakhapatnam by five organizations to control traffic and maintain law and order. Participating organizations and their respective locations include Brihaspati Technology (Hyderabad) at the Sanpas Vinayaka Temple Junction. Metafusion Technology (Noida) for Uruvasi Junction, Dwarakanagar and RTC Complexes. R&B Junction and Passport Office Data Car (Bengaluru). NEC (Noida) of Gopalapatnam Petrol Bank Junction and Simhachalam RTC Complex. and CMS Computers Limited (Mumbai), Yendada Junction, Vims Hospital, and Old Dairy Farm.GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said the RFP will soon be issued for full-scale implementation of the project. “Of the 115 major junctions in the city, the project covers around 50 junctions. The project offers many advantages. For example, under signal synchronization, green lights are synchronized between signals, reducing latency at signals and lowering pollution levels. The pilot project was tested at Giri Pradakshina and determined the number of followers taking part in the annual Simhachalam Temple Festival through a facial recognition system. Garg said:It automatically detects violations such as excessive speed, no helmet riding, red light jumps, illegal parking, and travel in the wrong direction via an AI-based traffic system and issues traffic challenges accordingly. The technology also helps identify individuals with criminal history or suspected individuals in real time as they move around the city, and information is relayed to relevant police stations via a command control centre.Experts say the new adaptive traffic signal controllers allow individual junctions to be managed independently or as part of a group. It can also be easily reconfigured as needed via a central control system. The design of these controllers is flexible, allowing the joints to be integrated into a specific corridor or area with minimal intervention. Ultimately, all junctions are integrated along both the national highway and internal roads of Visakhapatnam to achieve optimal corridor synchronization. It can also provide green corridor functionality for emergency and VIP vehicles, and the system is ready to activate if necessary.
