The government held its first meeting at the Prime Minister's Office on Friday to promote enhanced use of artificial intelligence and related risk management.
A discussion centered on an outline of the basic plan proposed by the government on AI, which aims to transform Japan, which has the world's best environment for the use and development of AI, into a country. The government hopes to finalize the master plan by the end of this year.
The headquarters, led by Prime Minister Isba and led by all Cabinet Ministers, was established on September 1st under the new AI Act enacted in May. Develop a basic plan and establish guidelines for appropriate AI use in line with international standards.
“AI is extremely important in terms of security,” Isba told the day's meeting. “As the global development race intensifies, support measures need to be implemented promptly.”
The Basic Plan outline states that the use of AI has not been fully promoted in Japan so far, and AI-related investments remain minimal compared to the country's economic size. Japan says it supports the principles of a human-centered AI society to enable ongoing cooperation between humans and AI, and to balance the promotion of innovation and risk management.
Noting that building a national strategy is essential amid concerns about delays in AI research and development, the outline sets out four basic policies. We will accelerate the promotion of AI use, strategically strengthen our AI development capabilities, lead related governance, and pursue continuous transformation into an AI society.
