WhatsApp has announced the launch of a new feature that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create unique backgrounds for cameras and video calls. Innovative tools powered by meta AI generate unique visuals in real time while ensuring full privacy and security of call data. This feature is currently being deployed to select users in the latest version of WhatsApp for Android and iOS.
How to create a custom background
To use the AI-powered background feature, users must open the camera and tap the Call Effect button. From there, you can select the background and select “Create with AI.” After explaining the background of your purpose in a few words, Meta AI generates images in real time. Once confirmed, this new background instantly replaces the actual environment seen in the camera.
AI-generated background use cases
AI-powered backgrounds are especially useful when preloaded options by WhatsApp do not meet the needs of users. For example, if someone wants to create artistic patterns that do not exist in fantasy landscapes or real life, you can use this feature. Perfect for users to express themselves creatively, hide messy rooms, or match the atmosphere of conversation.
Calls remain end-to-end encrypted
Even with AI-generated backgrounds being introduced, WhatsApp's privacy commitment remains unchanged. All calls and chats are still protected with end-to-end encryption. That means you can't read, listen, or share who (even WhatsApp or Meta). Selecting an AI background changes the visual appearance of your environment without compromising call privacy.
Availability and Language Support
Currently, AI-generated background and meta-AI integration are available to a limited number of users. Features availability may vary by country and not all accounts in your region can access them at once. Furthermore, it currently supports only some languages, including English, Arabic, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. WhatsApp will gradually increase availability over time.
