Rochester – Over 200 computer scientists, health researchers and medical professionals will be in Rochester this weekend for machine learning for medical conferences.
Goal: More collaboration between scientists creating artificial intelligence algorithms and healthcare providers who ultimately use them.
“Historically, the conferences have been primarily scientists,” said Shauna Overgaard, senior director of AI strategy and frameworks at Mayo Clinic. “It's been pretty recent that they really tried to include clinicians, and that's part of why they looked for Mayo Clinic to be hosted this year.”
As health systems emphasize its role in the development and partnership of healthcare AI, a hosting obligation arises for Mayo Clinic. Last month, Mayo Clinic and Nvidia announced a partnership to support Mayo's AI models using Tech Company's DGX SuperPod SuperComputer.
This summer, at Mayo Clinic's own AI Summit, in-house AI leaders spoke about the nearly 100 AI algorithms currently used in clinical settings and “incorporating AI into mayo fabrics.”
“Mayo Clinic is a physician-run organization,” Overguard said. “If you're developing AI solutions, your clinician is fundamentally at the heart of it.”
While many of the conference participants represent the computer science side of AI, Thursday's pre-meeting workshop was designed to help physicians and other clinicians gain practical experience in AI development. The morning began with speeches from two leaders of the American Medical Association, the country's largest physician organization.
“AI has become part of our daily conversation, so it often happens, “What about AI Ethics?” “What is the role of humanity in AI and AI development?”
The majority of physicians surveyed by the AMA already use AI tools such as scribes who visit patients. Hundreds of FDA-cleared AI-powered medical devices are available in the US market.

However, AI use is just one of many factors affecting the healthcare ecosystem. Providers burnout and shortages, time limits, legal liability, and an aging population.
“When we're talking about things to think about, technical solutions: do those solutions actually deal with these things and make life easier?” Cooley said.

Until the afternoon, workshop participants took two healthcare AI-focused courses from Nvidia's online education department.
“Hopefully, clinicians are actually coded and feel they're actually in the ML weed,” said Dr. Kaivalya Deshpande, doctor at NYU Langone Hospital, Brooklyn and MLHC Program Chairman.
The MLHC meeting will be held on Friday, August 15th and Saturday, August 16th at Hilton in downtown Rochester.
