Google scales AI use to detect invalid ad traffic

Google says it is expanding its use of AI to combat fake traffic with ads. This should improve the actual results and data that are attributed to Google's promotions.

Invalid traffic (IVT) in Google Ads comes from Clicks and impressions from non-general users, including accidental clicks, as well as clicks from bots and malicious sources, and intentional attempts to inflate costs or earn illegal revenue.

This is a serious problem. Invalid clicks can increase ad costs and distort metrics without producing real results. And while Google has regulations to counter this, it's up to the publisher to make sure that clicks on ads are relevant.

However, Google is trying to provide more support, and modern AI tools are now able to better detect traffic from invalid sources.

As Google explained:

We have been using AI to fight IVT for a long time, but the new applications have improved the results even further. Along with Google Research and Google Deepmind, the Ad Traffic Quality Team recently introduced industry-leading defenses with large language models to more accurately identify ad placements that generate invalid behavior. ”

Google says its updated system will provide stronger protection by analyzing apps and web content, ad placement and user interaction.

“For example, we have significantly improved our content review capabilities, leading to a 40% reduction in IVT due to deceptive or disruptive advertising service practices. This will help advertisers reach their intended audience and keep policy violators from the platform.”

At least in theory, Google Ads should reduce costs and allow promotions to reach many of your actual target audience.

Google also says that “large automated manual checks” are being performed to ensure that advertisers are not billed against IVT, even if the ads are offering their services.

Combined, these measures should help you improve your Google Ads experience and maximize your results by reducing false metrics of engagement.

And when you combine this with improved AI targeting, you need to make it more sure you reach more real people with promotions. In addition to improving campaign performance, it also improves audience understanding and increases the context of future promotions.
