Chief Election Committee Member (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today described artificial intelligence (AI) as “a greater threat than weapons” and “a greater threat than weapons” in future parliamentary elections.
Speaking to reporters this morning at Khulna's regional election office ahead of the exchange meeting on preparations for the 13th Assembly election, the CEC warned of the dangers posed by the misuse of AI.
“The misuse of AI has made it possible to circulate content using my accurate images and voice,” he said.
“We are trying to address this issue. Even developed countries face serious challenges. AI can produce such false information and disinformation that has in some cases completely destroyed election campaigns.”
He highlighted the important role of journalists, and in particular mainstream media, in combating such threats and ensuring accurate information reaches the public.
The CEC further said that a willingness to curb terrorism and restore illegal weapons will continue ahead of the election.
“We want a transparent election. No activity is being carried out in the darkness of the night. We want everything to be rough to ensure transparency,” he said.
“Our goal is to present a fair election to the nation. If it fails, it raises questions about Bangladesh's future.”
He added that one of the biggest challenges facing the Election Commission is to restore public confidence in the voting process and ensure voter turnout, especially among women.
“We are also wary of any form of technology-driven interference that could affect elections,” the CEC noted.
The meeting was attended by additional regional election managers in the Khulna division as well as senior districts and Upazila election authorities. The CEC participated in the event as the Chief Guest.
