There are lots of great YouTube videos with lots of interesting information, but sometimes you're in a hurry or trying to find something specific in what might be padding. Luckily, Google Gemini can analyze YouTube videos on your behalf and truly dive into details that you may have missed or may not have had time. I don't just mean transcribing it or guessing what's going on based on the title. Also, Gemini and YouTube are both Google products, so there is no need to download and re-upload the video. Simply share a link to the video and start asking questions.
It's very easy to use, but there are some benefits that you might not notice right away. Here are some of my favorite ways to use AI features:
Timestamp Summary
To analyze YouTube videos, you need to do just that and ask Gemini to include a YouTube link. For example, I asked Gemini to “analyze this video”, pasted it in a YouTube link and pasted it into a great breakthrough video about the history of Muppet Show.
Gemini has returned with a lengthy breakdown of video exploration about how Jim Henson brought the show to television, the character's evolution, how the show works, and how it brought the show to its legacy. Even better, the video had hyperlinks that helped me take me directly to where these bits are being discussed.
Timestamped Trivia
It's just as useful as a summary, but sometimes you might want something more specific. For example, I asked Gemini to analyze a video about the perfect two-week trip to Japan. The summary it provided was great, but I wanted to see more about what I eat when I'm in Tokyo, so I asked Gemini to say, “In the video, we'll discuss restaurants in Tokyo?” They gave me some writing about what the video recommends and provided hyperlinks where the discussion began.
Even if the video maker didn't set up a chapter for the video, especially if you're hungry and thinking about traveling at the same time, I like the idea of not having to wait for a portion of the video you want and getting into it right away.
Find a film spot
If you are not paying close attention or have a video on mute, you may not always understand what you are seeing on screen. You can ask Gemini to improve it for you. In the Japanese video, when I watched half the second half, a beautiful market with a million exciting shops was shown in a montage. I noticed the video time and asked Gemini what the video was discussing at that point. The answer turns out to be the West Key Market, more than 100 food stalls. Definitely a must-see for my imagination's journey to Japan.
Quiz time
One of the underrated (and very nerdy) activities you can do on Gemini and YouTube is to do a little quiz with the video. It took Gemini less than a minute to compile 10 questions that fit into the mid-Muppet Research 101 Muppet Research. The questions included everything from the premise of the show to guest stars and popular recurring segments, and even their impact on later shows.
I continued the quiz and finally got 9 out of 10 questions correctly. Gemini provided a little summary of what I missed and suggested rewatching a specific 30-second clip if you need a review. But as stupid as making a quiz with a video made just for fun, shows how anything works. You can test yourself with historical videos, science explanators, cooking tutorials, and more that you really want to learn. Gemini may make some of these videos a real lesson, not just instant entertainment.
