Meta has launched a new internal R&D division dedicated to artificial close construction, Bloomberg reported Monday.
The division, called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), is led by former CEOs of Scale AI and Github, Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman, respectively. Additionally, seven former Openai engineers will be involved, according to an internal memo from CEO Mark Zuckerberg. CNBC. Meta's plans to launch a new division were first reported last month.

“As the pace of AI progresses accelerates, the development of super intelligence is beginning to be seen,” Zuckerberg wrote in a memo. “We believe this will mark the beginning of a new era of humanity, and we are completely committed to doing what Meta needs to lead.” Openai CEO Sam Altman expressed similar beliefs in a recent blog post, adding that Openai is first and foremost “Superintelligence Research Company.”
MSL's main mission, Zuckerberg, wrote in his internal memo, is to provide “personal emergency matters to everyone.” In classic tech industry fashion, this statement is breathtaking and grand, and deeply vague.
Artificial confluence is usually defined as a computer system that is more exponentially more sophisticated than the human brain. This marks a major technical leap from artificial general information (AGI). This can coincide with human performance across virtually all economically valuable tasks.

Like AGI, Superintelligence is currently completely hypothetical and lacks a single universally agreed definition. The term was popularized by Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrum in a 2014 book of the same name.
Zuckerberg didn't make much clarity into the notes surrounding what's accompanied by “personal closeness for everyone,” but speculated that MSL would evolve in line with the company's Llama family's large language model and its smart glasses division.

Judging by the fact that all former Operané Engineers on the MSL roster played some role in building the O-series of the company's models, it is a safe bet for the new division to prioritize the development of inference models.
Competition across the industry is getting hot
Zuckerberg's commitment to making Meta a leader in AI development has been revealed by the company's recent efforts to poach top talent from its competitors. Altman said Meta provided a $100 million signature bonus to employees of his company. This is an astounding sum even by Silicon Valley standards, but last week's former Openai engineer called this “fake news.”

Meta is not alone. As AI investments, and hype continue to grow, virtually every big tech company has been trying to attract top talent. Now it is the most important resource in the industry. Also, many people are buying smaller AI startups to make them more competitive. For example, Apple is reportedly gaining the confusion of AI-powered online search companies.
Meanwhile, AI seems to make it more difficult for younger, less experienced engineers to be hired, as more experienced professionals in the industry are finding a brilliantly paying home among some of the biggest companies in high tech.
