Ride-Hailing giant Uber is promoting its data labeling services to potential clients following the Meta's 49% scale AI acquisition.
In an interview with Fortune, Uber executive Megha Yethadka said the company is expanding its AI business by providing large datasets and tools to organizations developing in-house AI models. This includes licensing Uber's data labeling platform and associated technologies so that customers can build AI agents.
“For Uber, our core has always been the perfect platform for flexible on-demand work,” says Yethadka. “It's now expanding into this digital task business very much.”
Last year, Uber announced its data labeling platform, reporting in November that Bloomberg provided “coder employers” for its AI project.
On Friday, Uber AI announced an expansion to its AI data platform, offering “customized data solutions to build smarter AI models and agents.”
Data labeling is the process of assigning tags or annotations to raw datasets such as images, text, and audio, making it easier to understand with AI and machine learning models. Industry research projects that the data labeling market could cover $17 billion by 2030.

Meta will move to data labeling through scale AI investment
As reported by Fortune, Uber's expansion into the data labeling market follows Meta's investment in the $14.8 billion scale. The deal not only strengthened Mark Zuckerberg's position in the AI race, but also reportedly destabilized some of the Scale's existing clients.
That sentiment was reflected in a Bloomberg report on Thursday, saying ChatGpt Maker Openai is phased out the use of Scale data services in the wake of meta trading.
Large tech companies are actively pursuing artificial intelligence infrastructure and applications to dominate potentially transformative industries. This is because industry pioneers like Ben Goertzel say the dawn of artificial general information could only be years away.
As CNBC reports, large American tech companies are expected to spend more than $300 billion on AI this year alone.
