On Wednesday, Google ran its search live in AI mode as part of a small experiment in the US. This feature allows users to have real-time searches and conversations similar to the Google app, just like Gemini Live. This was first presented at the Mountain View-based Tech Giant I/O 2025 keynote session in May as an extension of AI mode. Search Live is equipped with a custom version of Gemini and has audio input functionality, allowing you to not only ask questions about queries but also follow-up questions.
Search live in AI mode
In a blog post, Google said that Search Live is equipped with the same custom version of Gemini as the AI mode and has advanced audio capabilities. It can be accessed on both Android and iOS devices via the waveform icon just below the Google Apps search bar. Tap this icon to open a full-screen interface for searching, with two options: mute and transcript.
The latter allows users to view text responses and tap instead of verbal commands to continue the conversation. We also provide links to relevant websites on-screen, in case you want to access more details.
According to the company, users can quit the Google app and continue their conversation with the search, as they search for live works in the background. Additionally, you can revisit the conversation by going to the AI mode history. Google says the feature leverages query fan-out techniques to provide users with a variety of useful content from the web.
This feature is currently being tested as part of an AI mode experiment via opt-in in the search lab. Available only in the US, Google has not yet expanded to other regions.
Currently, it is limited to live, live, audio-based commands in AI mode, but the company says it will also introduce the ability to point the camera towards the object in real-time questions in the coming months.
Previous reports suggest that this feature supports four different voices: Cosmo, Neso, Terra and Cassini. This can be selected from three dot menus in the Search Live Interface.
