Members of the 374th Contracting Squadron attended an introductory linguistics course at Yokota Air Base, Japan, June 11.

The organization hosting the course specializes in the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning for language translation and localization. With a focus on improving translation efficiency for specific language domains, the course provided new capabilities for the 374th CONS personnel.

During the course, 374th Airborne Division soldiers learned how the use of AI can improve both professional and interpersonal communication within their units and between Yokota Air Base and the surrounding community.

“The idea is that this technology will allow us to become more linguistically familiar with Japan's industrial base and potentially expand that base,” said Jacob Love, a supervising contracting specialist with the 374th Airborne Division.

Love noted that contracting communities often operate in regions where English is not the primary language, and the technology could be deployed globally to bridge language barriers in other regions.

The introduction of AI technology in communications will eliminate language barriers between U.S. and Japanese military personnel at Yokota Air Base, strengthen partnerships, and ultimately promote a free and open Indo-Pacific.
