1: Midjourney seeks to shed light on studio’s use of AI in high-stakes copyright battle
First, Variety’s Gene Maddaus reported today that Midjourney is trying to force major movie studios to reveal how they use AI, saying the plaintiffs are doing exactly what they’re suing.
The studio sued Midjourney for copyright infringement in late 2025. He claimed that Midjourney illegally used its works and characters to train AI models. Midjourney argued that the training was protected under fair use.
Previously, Midjourney asked the court for discovery related to the studio’s use of AI. The magistrate overseeing the case limited the scope of the claim, saying the studio only needed to disclose its use of AI to the public. Midjourney is now asking the court to reconsider its decision, saying the studio is engaging in the same conduct it is suing.
2: Suspected operator of HiAnime piracy ring arrested in Vietnam with US support
Then today, TorrentFreak’s Ernest van der Sar writes that Vietnamese authorities have arrested the suspected operator of the HiAnime piracy ring, which is said to have been involved in more than 100 pirated websites and earned $12.8 million in advertising revenue.
HiAnime has been on the radar of rights holders for years, even appearing in the US Trade Representative’s infamous 2026 market report. Thanks to its network, the US government also designated Vietnam as a “priority foreign country.”
The two countries are currently cooperating, resulting in the arrest of seven people suspected of operating the network. The US government is calling for a “deterrent prison sentence” for the suspected operator, noting that similar cases in Japan have only resulted in suspended sentences.
3: PS5 fans flock to piracy as Sony plans to phase out physical games
Finally, today Polygon’s Patricia Hernandez reported that Sony recently announced that it will phase out physical game sales by the end of 2028. This has led many users to take a renewed interest in jailbreaking their PS5 consoles, both for legitimate reasons and for piracy reasons.
According to Google, the number of searches for terms such as “PS5 jailbreak” skyrocketed after the announcement. Similarly, the PS5 Jailbreak subreddit has had over 10,000 new visitors in the past week.
Sony has a long history of closing down various game stores and removing purchased content from users’ libraries. Therefore, the loss of physical media has caused many users to worry about the future of their purchases and look for ways to save them.
