25 Healthcare AI Use Cases with Examples

Applications of AI

Healthcare systems are under growing pressure from rising patient data volumes and increasing demand for personalized care.

Healthcare AI applications have emerged as a powerful solution to these problems by optimizing processes, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and improving patient outcomes.

A recent study shows that hybrid teams of human clinicians and AI systems make more accurate medical diagnoses, largely because they tend to make different and complementary errors that help correct one another. These findings indicate strong potential of AI to enhance patient safety and promote more equitable healthcare.

Patient Care

1. Virtual wards

A virtual ward is a model of care where patients receive hospital-level treatment at home while being remotely monitored by medical staff.

Real-life example: NHS virtual wards

Thousands of seriously ill children in England are now being treated at home through NHS “virtual wards,” avoiding long hospital stays. Using wearable devices such as heart rate and oxygen monitors, doctors can track patients’ vital signs and respond quickly if anything changes.

Children with conditions such as asthma, heart problems, infections, and long-term illnesses receive hospital-level care remotely, with nurses visiting homes when tests or medication are needed. The data is monitored around the clock by clinical teams through platforms like Feebris, which uses AI to flag early warning signs (see Figure 1).
