Thiruvananthapuram: The state announced the Kerala Artificial Intelligence Mission (K-AIM), marking a decisive move to integrate artificial intelligence into governance. The mission, announced in the government’s policy address to the Legislative Assembly on January 20, aims to make departments smarter and more citizen-centric. This is no longer just a theoretical idea, but the foundations of this initiative have already begun, with clear goals set.
By March, 12 government departments, including local government (LSG), agriculture and police, will have deployed 21 AI applications customized for tasks such as application processing, socio-economic trend analysis, water planning and livestock disease detection. “The K-AI initiative has shown steady progress from conceptualization to readiness for implementation, with departments and AI companies, including startups, working together to deliver solutions where AI can drive change.
According to development officials, the LSG department is preparing an AI tool to integrate rainfall, soil moisture, groundwater and consumption data to formulate water plans.
State police have been exploring AI-powered facial recognition and vehicle identification systems for intelligence purposes. Several other departments are having similar discussions about requirements.
Apart from customized solutions, there are common AI applications such as decision support systems. Such applications will be procured directly by the Kerala State IT Mission (KSITM). KSITM, with support from the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), has developed a platform that connects departments with AI companies.
