Elon Musk and Xai announced Monday that Grok users can quickly generate artificial intelligence videos with sound in the app.
The new feature is called Imagine, allowing users to create both images and videos based on text prompts, turning static images into videos. Currently, access appears to be limited to some employees and selected influencers, with the @Grok X account writing on Monday evening:

On Thursday, Musk teased “I'm getting my grapes back, but AI form.” It mentioned the popular social media platform that closed Twitter in 2017. Xai employees responded that Grok Imagine Video could be up to 6 seconds.
The new feature works by explaining what users want to have in their videos based on videos shared online by several Xai employees and users with early access that users imagine, and the app generates several videos that correspond to the descriptions they can choose from.
Xai employees and Grok enthusiasts shared an online video introducing the new features. Xai employees posted a video generated by cat AI running through space, with another employee posting an astronaut walking through an alien landscape.
Xai employees said at X that the new feature promises indecent potential.
In a post sharing a video of a nearly nude woman, Matty Roy wrote, “Grok Imagine Videos has a spicy mode that allows you to nude.” He said in a reply to another post that the new video generation feature could create realistic videos of humans.
A small number of users in the comments expressed concern that the new feature could allow users to create explicit deepfakes. A Xai spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Trump administration has pushed it to crack down on the creation of explicit deepfakes. President Donald Trump signed the Take It Down Act in May. Originally written by Senator R-Texas, the law believes it is illegal to publish non-consensual, sexually explicit images and videos, whether they are real or computer-generated.
Grok's new AI feature had already elicited concerns from some supporters due to the app's vulgar and sexually explicit “peers.” AI character users can speak through text and speech. Musk also announced that a new companion named “Valentine” has become available on Grok.
This month, Glock came into controversy when he published a number of anti-Semitic posts. The official @Grok account later said in a statement to X that it was “actively working to remove inappropriate posts.” Many posts have been knocked down, including what the chatbot calls itself “Mecha Hitler.”
Many AI platforms have made AI video capabilities available, including Openai, which released SORA in February, and Google, which released VEO 3 this month.
Musk responds to users who compared Grok's video generation quality to Gemini's quality and says, “Grok Imagine is still in its early beta and optimized for maximum enjoyment, so it should be rated as “the fastest time to make fun and shareable videos” rather than visual/audio perfection. Xai is adding a specialised circuit designed to generate computer graphics to its supercomputer Corosus in Memphis, Tennessee, according to Musk.
