Global stock markets were mostly lower on Friday, with Wall Street retreating from record levels amid lingering concerns about a bubble in the high-profile artificial intelligence sector.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 both hit historic highs on Thursday, but that didn't stop many from worrying as the week drew to a close.
Technology stocks were particularly hurt after Oracle issued a weak outlook this week. Chipmaker Broadcom was wary about margins, sparking a selloff.
Shares of Oracle and Broadcom fell more than 11% and 4.5%, respectively. Nvidia, the darling of the AI boom, is no exception, dropping 3.3% after recently reporting impressive third-quarter results.
But fears of a bubble may be overblown, as unprecedented AI spending is “driven by new economic realities,” said Rudy Torrijos, director of industry research at data tracking firm Pitchbook.
“Concerns about overinvestment are overblown, and hyperscaler capex is not unlike the dot-com bubble. Rather, the industry has entered a secular supercycle,” he said.
Investors are also keeping an eye on future moves by the Federal Reserve after it cut interest rates three times in a row after a multi-year hiatus and as the central bank faces continued pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Regulators on Wednesday cut interest rates by 25 basis points, but signaled they had only cut once in 2026 and may suspend similar moves again in the future. Fed officials continue to track high inflation and a weak job market, especially after Thursday's government data showed U.S. jobless claims rose by the most in 4 1/2 years.
The European Central Bank, Bank of England and Bank of Japan are scheduled to announce their interest rate decisions next week, but analysts have mixed expectations.
“When stocks are trading near all-time highs, you need good news to sustain them,” said Nigel Green, CEO of Dubai-based financial services firm De Vere Group. “If investors believe that interest rate cuts are necessary to protect jobs, cutting rates to support the economy could spark more doubt than confidence.”
“When investors begin to question the strength of the economy, profit-taking becomes more likely. Rate cuts provide both a reason to take profits and a reason to hold back,” he said.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 0.5% lower, the S&P 500 index fell 1.7% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 1.1%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was the only index up for the week. Year-to-date, they're up about 14%, 16%, and 20%, respectively.
In Europe, London's FTSE 100 index settled 0.6% lower, taking cues from Wall Street's AI concerns and digesting the UK economy's unexpected contraction in the third quarter.
Paris' CAC40 fell 0.2% and Frankfurt's DAX fell 0.5%.
In Asia, major indexes closed early, matching Wall Street's Thursday highs.
Tokyo's Nikkei Stock Average rose 1.4%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 1.8% and the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.4%.
In commodity markets, oil prices gave up on gains due to oversupply concerns, falling more than 4% for the week as a potential peace deal between Russia and Ukraine overshadowed increased US military action in Venezuela.
Brent fell 0.26% to settle at $61.12 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate fell 0.28% to $57.44 per barrel.
Meanwhile, gold hit its highest price in nearly two months, but fell as the dollar stabilized. The precious metal, considered a safe-haven asset, rose 0.43% to $4,300.40 an ounce.
Meanwhile, silver fell nearly 4% to end at $61.96 an ounce after hitting a record high of $64.64.
