AI is not only being used on land, but also at sea. At least at ferry company Stena Line, the development and implementation of a new AI system called Voyage Optimisation System is being tested, for example, on the route between Gothenburg and the Danish port of Frederikshavn. AI allows ships to optimise their operations by precisely analysing the various factors that affect the ship's navigation, such as wind, waves and water depth during the voyage, ensuring precise and energy-efficient output. This data is collected in real time and processed by AI-powered algorithms, reducing fuel consumption and ensuring operational strategies.
“The use of AI has clearly optimised our operations and supported our vision of a more sustainable future. We are pleased that this technology not only represents a major step forward in our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and work more efficiently, but also gives our crew more time to manage their day-to-day tasks,” said Michael Ljunge, Digital Engineering Manager at Stena Line.
Delivery Assistant
AI system developers work closely with seafarers, including both officers and captains, to continually receive feedback and make adjustments, which has proven invaluable in improving AI solutions and ensuring their practical use in operations.
“One of the biggest challenges in introducing AI is ensuring that everyone on board understands how the system works. Initially, the system was named 'AI Captain' but we quickly changed this to avoid the misunderstanding that AI was replacing human decision-making. Instead, the technology is now presented as an intelligent assistant supporting the captain and crew in decision-making, thereby integrating the AI system in a more natural way and serving as a tool to complement human expertise and experience,” explains Michael Ljunge.
The growing use of AI and the resulting efficiency gains are just the beginning. With current technological advances, Stena Line is expected to continue setting the standard for greener, more innovative maritime transport. These developments are also part of Stena Line's wider strategy to integrate sustainable solutions into all areas of its business, such as the introduction of an AI assistant to help travel agency Sembos streamline trip planning and booking, disrupting the traditional travel industry.
