As previously reported, many of the quotes at the end of a chapter contained nonexistent works or important errors referring to chapters of chapters. We checked some of these errors and four were quoted by reference.
These types of errors are common in texts generated by large language models such as chatgpt. Using AI without any declarations other than copy editing is contrary to Springer Nature's policy.
As of June 26th, the book, which sold for $169, had been accessed 3,782 times.
Following our reporting, Yung En Chee, a quantitative ecologist at the University of Melbourne, contacted the university library, which has the book in the catalog. According to her post about Bluesky and an email we saw, on July 2nd, Chee asked the library to “suspend access or ask Springer Nature for an explanation or refund.” The library has sent an update saying that the publisher was aware of the problem and is currently investigating what happened. The book was removed from the library's catalog by July 14th.
Kersjes said Springer Nature is “committed to publishing accurate, reliable and content that is consistent with the highest editing standards,” and “we can review this case carefully to understand what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again.”
Springer Nature, like other publishers, has previously withdrawn its book.
Govindakumar Madhavan, author of the book, did not respond to a request for comment. According to his author Bio, Madhavan is the founder and CEO of Seaportai.
