Of US desk workers using artificial intelligence tools in their workplaces, only 22% say employers are actively monitoring AI use, according to an August 20 report by business advisory firm Eisneramper.

80% of employees reported overall positive experiences using AI in the workplace, but the company said it had a formal AI policy, while 28% said it would use AI even if it was banned at the workplace.

“These results illustrate the communication gap between employers and employees,” Jen Clark, director of technology enablement at Eisneramper, said in a news release. “Employees cite the lack of oversight, and employers now have valuable opportunities to not only establish a comprehensive AI strategy, but also communicate effectively to their teams.”

In a survey of over 1,000 workers with bachelor's degrees and above using AI last year, 68% said they found a mistake in the technology. Still, 82% said they were confident in an accurate and satisfying response from AI.

In most cases, workers say they use AI to save time, with 64% claiming they use that time to do more at work.

However, employees also said they use their time for personal reasons, such as walking (19%) and lunch (16%).

As AI grows in the workplace, 74% said workers should compensate for AI work experience.

“Employees are rapidly integrating AI into daily tasks. However, without a deliberate employer strategy around transparency and communication, businesses risk losing momentum in innovation,” said Mary Rizzuti, who practices Eisneramper's compensation resources practice, in a statement. “It is important for HR business partners to equip their employees with the right tools, training and policies to ensure that AI is responsible and effectively integrated.”

In particular, the best AI adopters in HR include wholesale transactions (33%) and restaurants, travel and accommodation (25%).

Only 20% of workers said that AI was used during onboarding, of which 92% said it had a positive effect on their feelings about the company.

However, when it comes to AI use in performance reviews, about a third says they see a positive impact, while another third says they see a negative impact.
