Elon Musk's Xai has made Grok Imagine Image and Video Generator at your disposal through the Grok app on iOS and Android. Previously locked to X's SuperGrok and Premium Plus subscribers, this feature is now available for free to all US-based users.
The timing of the announcement shared on the official X account right after Openai's GPT-5 is apparently right to compete for attention. Grok Imagine can create still images or 6-second video clips from a text prompt or a reference image. This format is similar to Google's VEO3 model.
Glock's controversial past
While this technology has clear creative possibilities, it has also attracted criticism. Grok Imagine faced a fierce repulsion of what is called “spicy mode” and allowed users to create explicit videos, including high-profile incidents that included deepfakes generated by Taylor Swift's AI. Modes are not visible in the current free version of the app.
This is not the first time that Glock brand tools have caused anxiety. Previous iterations of the Grok AI app have attracted attention on the “Ai Waifu” chatbot.
With the new rollout, Xai bets that wider access will increase the visibility of Grok Imagine, but this decision also poses the risk of governing debates about how such tools are mitigated and the boundaries of AI generated content. No timeline for Grok Imagine's international deployment has been announced.
