Pune: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said India could withstand artificial intelligence “tsunami” but flagged the dangers of technology and saw a fake video of himself used in the ads.
Here at the inauguration of the Symbiosis Institute of Artificial Intelligence (SAII), Fadnavis, as Minister of Home Affairs, said that the biggest challenge AI has brought to him was the use of financial fraud. Someone's voices and images are created through AI and used to persuade people to share sensitive information, he pointed out.
“…I came across my video on social media the other day. It was like a normal video I was giving a speech, but the speech was different. The voice was mine and I (his AI avatar) was saying that.
All technology is a double-edged sword, but “we should look at positivity,” he said. India has the ability to withstand AI “tsunamis,” he said, just as it was during the dot-com boom.
“There's a big debate between people… What will happen in the world after embracing artificial intelligence? What will happen in the job market? How many of us will lose jobs? How many jobs will become obsolete after the advances in artificial intelligence?” he said.
The Prime Minister noted that similar concerns about the work were expressed when the Internet and dotcom era arrived. “But India gave the answer, and in a way the Indians ruled this dotcom boom, they became pioneers of the world of the dotcom era, and the digital world piloted by Silicon Valley was also controlled by the Indians,” he said.
Fadnavis said the country needs the best system in the AI space.
He added that AI, quantum computing and semiconductors are “three pillars that change everything in their survival,” and that technology should be viewed as enablers rather than threats.
