forbes Earlier this year, he spoke with the tech company’s longtime executives about the new Founders Tower building, how they’re avoiding company-wide layoffs, and what the concept of “employee experience” means in a changing workplace. We talked about what it means.
You recently led a rewrite of Adobe’s corporate values. why?
Towards the end of 2021, I was sitting in a meeting exhausted. … and [Adobe CEO] Shantanu [Narayen] He turned to me and literally abruptly said: “Hey Gloria, have you ever thought about our values and whether it’s time to rethink them?” We knew we were entering a phase of serious consideration of new ways of working. And we have grown a lot. A third of his employees appear to have joined during the pandemic.
There is a lot of turmoil going on in Silicon Valley. With the social contract potentially changing for tech workers, how are you planning to address these issues?
It’s about psychological safety. An environment in which people feel a strong sense of belonging and security helps them to be most innovative and creative. … We know that we need to constantly re-prioritize, reassign resources and, if necessary, reorganize. But we also know that humanity is at the core of everything we do. And it takes years to build and a moment to lose.
you said in an article interview While many tech companies have repeatedly laid off employees, Adobe is committed to avoiding company-wide layoffs, he said. Isn’t that a risk?
We come from a very strong position. We are always very disciplined when it comes to hiring, resource allocation and investments. So mass layoffs? It’s not part of our strategy. It’s not without places where you need to continuously consider how you run your business and what your different needs are. [how we’re] Balance between different organizations. But this tool declares thousands of people [redundant] Is this a task given to the organization? It’s not in our strategy and we do everything we can to avoid going there.
You opened Founders Tower at a time when many companies were cutting office space.
Our employee experience team was already looking to the future of work when we were designing this. Rather, the pandemic has only helped accelerate what they had already planned: people to use physical space differently. It’s not just about floors of cubes where people show up to work at their desks. We have 400 different workspaces, including City Hall, Collaboration Spaces, and Team Huddle Areas.
Vice President of Employee Experience is part of your title. what does that word mean to you?
I can’t come up with the words yet, but I often think of the sports analogy of building a winning team. It’s not just about providing great experiences for individual employees. We build great teams through recruitment. conditioning, training, coaching, and the field environment. That’s everything. …Nobody said exercise was fun. But does it do it to be a winning team instead of simply providing people with the most luxurious and decadent experience? I think the future is there.
