A year ago apple With the launch of Apple Intelligence, the response to sophisticated chatbots and systems waves began with the arrival of ChatGPT and the age of generation AI.
Analysts said Apple's billion-plus-one iPhone installation base, data on devices and custom-designed silicon chips are benefits that will help them become AI leaders.
But since then, it has been an overwhelming 12 months.
Apple Intelligence stumbled from the gate during rivals like Openai. Google and Meta I'm continuing to launch new Generator-AI models.
Now, investors are asking Apple to do big things to keep up with AI. This is rapidly changing the tech industry.
CEO Tim Cook will speak at Apple's annual Worldwide Developer Conference in Cupertino, California on Monday., Fans and developers will want to hear how the company's approach to AI has changed. This is especially important after some Apple executives say that the technology is why the iPhone will replace next-generation computer hardware.
“We may not need an iPhone in 10 years,” Apple Services chief Eddy Cue told court last month. One of the government's antitrust cases against Google, He added that AI is a “massive technological change” that can overturn existing people like Apple.
The Apple Intelligence Rollout was Rocky. The first feature launched in October – the tool for text rewriting, new SIRI animations and improved audio, and the tool for generating slideshow movies from user photos was overwhelming. One of the key features announced in December is bringing together a long stack of text messages. However, it was disabled due to news and media apps after discovering that the BBC actually twisted the headline to display incorrect information.
However, Apple's biggest stumbling came in early March. When the company says it's slowing down “more personal Siri,” it's a major improvement to the Siri Voice Assistant, which integrates with iPhone apps, so you can find more details from an internal email and make a restaurant reservation.
Apple had promoted the feature on television as the main reason to buy the iPhone 16, but after delaying it until “next year,” it pulled ads from broadcasts and YouTube. The company is currently facing a class action lawsuit from people who claim they are misunderstood in purchasing a new iPhone.

Apple Intelligence's first year was roughly the company's first year, but the company hasn't said it much publicly. However, it is reportedly reorganised some of the AI team.
JPMorgan Chase analyst Samik Chatterjee said this week that investors' expectations are scheduled for “inactive” WWDC. The company needs to sell features announced last year, and therefore it needs to address the key issue of lagging behind other large tech companies in relation to advances in AI.
Meanwhile, Apple faces new competition in its core business.
In May, Openai acquired startup IO for around $6.4 billion, leading former Apple chief designer Jony Ive to build AI hardware. The company does not provide details about future devices.
Meta has made a splash with Ray-Ban Meta Glass, which has sold over 2 million units since its launch in 2021. The device uses Meta's Llama major language model to answer questions spoken by users.
And last month, Android maker Google said that the Gemini model will become the default assistant for Android phones. The company has shown that it has gone beyond Siri's capabilities, including summarizing the video. Google has also announced a $150 million partnership Warby Parka We will develop smart glasses equipped with our own AI.
It is important that the company encourages users to purchase new iPhones as devices released before the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023 do not support features. But AI is not yet a key factor in smartphone sales, and may not be the case for years, says Forrester analyst Thomas Husson.
“There were some new cool features and services, but I don't think it's a huge change to the experience yet,” Husson said.
Apple declined to comment.
Apple needs to do something big
For years, Apple has not liked the term “artificial intelligence.” I prefer the academic term “machine learning.”
Apple focused on what could be efficiently run on battery-equipped mobile phones. The AI race led by Openai and Google was about bleeding edge features that require high power servers based on nvidia Graphic Process Unit or GPU.
ChatGpt was then launched in late 2022, with AI becoming the most important term in Silicon Valley. Soon afterwards, Cook told investors that Apple was spending “a great deal of time and effort” on technology.
Apple Intelligence is based on a set of languages and spreading models that the company has trained, but Apple is not publicly competing with Google, Openai, humanity or other companies on what it calls the “frontier model,” or the most capable AI system that needs to be trained on a large server cluster packed with NVIDIA chips and high-speed memory.
The difference between the way Apple and its rivals approach AI can be seen in the company's approach to capital expenditures. Apple spent $9.5 billion on capital expenditures in 2024, or about 2.4% of its total revenue.
The iPhone maker has rented the computing power needed to train foundation models, revealed last year from Google Cloud and other providers. Apple's rivals are pouring billions of dollars of GPUs to advance technology.
Meanwhile, Meta, Amazonthe alphabet and Microsoft It plans to collectively spend more than $300 billion on capital expenditures this year, starting with $200 billion last year. Amazon alone aims to spend $100 billion, and Microsoft has allocated $80 billion.
Apple's best chance to catch up quickly is to do what they've done many times in the past. It's about buying a company and turning it into a killer feature.
I bought it at Pa semi 2008 $278 million, It has been converted to seeds from the semiconductor department. Prior to the release of the Vision Pro headset, Apple purchased over 10 startups that tackled virtual and augmented reality. Even Siri was a startup before Apple bought it In 2010, it was over $200 million.
With $133 billion in cash and marketable securities in hand at the start of May, it's not often possible for Apple to buy, assuming regulatory clearance is available. However, Openai, Apple's current Siri partner, could be out of reach with a $300 billion valuation. And given the new relationship with Ive with Openai to build Hardware, there's a reason Apple will slow down its partnership.

Humanity, powered by Claude Chatbot, was valued at $61.5 billion in the March funding round. In the case of Google Antitrust, Cue, Apple's senior vice president, has been mentioned by humanity as a potential alternative to Google as the default search option for Safari browser on iPhones.
“They probably need to acquire humanity,” said Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management, who has been following Apple for decades.
It would be Apple's biggest acquisition. The most the company has paid to date is $3 billion. Part of the effort to catch when he bought Beats Electronics for $3 billion in 2014 Spotify In the music streaming market.
Apple can still buy companies that develop AI-based apps, even if they use open source or other company models. The confusion, which is currently fundraising at a $14 billion valuation, shows strong interest in the smartphone market and understands the value of being a default AI service.
In April, Perplexity announced a partnership with Motorola, reportedly in discussions with Samsung, integrating the technology into the Android version of a Korean company and receiving investment from Apple rivals. Kew said Apple was confused and debating the technology at its May trial.
It is also possible to handle frontier AI as Apple handles search as a service that Apple can fulfill through partnerships. Apple Software Chief Craig Federighi hinted at the WWDC panel discussion similar to last year, saying that Apple wanted to add other AI models, especially to the Apple Intelligence framework for specific purposes.
Federighi specifically mentioned Google, which allowed Gemini to speak to users in fluidity and process input coming from photos, videos, audio or text. Documents revealed during the Google Trial showed that Apple executives, including Cue and M&A chief Adrian Perica, were involved in negotiations over Gemini.

The Benefits of Apple's AI
Apple has been designing its own chips since 2010 and has kept AI in mind since at least 2018.
The most powerful Apple M-Series chips can take advantage of what is called “Unified Memory.” Apple also includes a good GPU for the chip, he said. WebAI builds software that allows users to fine-tune, train and run large models on consumer hardware.
Stout's Company is building clusters of consumer-grade Mac Studio computers to run large AI models like Meta's Llama.
“We chose the Apple Silicon because we think it's the best hardware for AI,” Stout said, adding that in his company's testing, Apple's chips can output 12 million tokens per dollar and 100 million tokens per dollar on the Nvidia H100.
Part of Apple's Siri strategy, announced last summer, was for developers to cajole developers to build snippets of new code into their apps.
Apple is still pushing “App Intent”, but the same system powers something like a lock screen widget, but the framework for how to work with Siri has not yet been released.

“You may not need an iPhone.”
Threats that represent AI to Apple, such as Google Gemini and Openai's ChatGPT, were highlighted by Queue in last month's trial. He suggested that the rise of AI has threatened Apple's biggest business.
“AI is a new technology shift and creating new opportunities for new entrants,” Cue said at a trial last month.
Silicon Valley has a growing sense that sophisticated AI interfaces may one day replace smartphones and laptops with new devices designed from the ground up to take advantage of AI-based interfaces. It could mean people talking or chatting with devices to command AI agents rather than tapping on touchscreens or keyboards.
When he joined Openai in May, Ive said he believes AI is enabling a new generation of hardware.
“We are absolutely sure we are literally on the brink of a new generation of technology that can make us better,” the iPhone designer, who left Apple in 2019, said in a video announcing his company's acquisition.
While AI represents Apple's current business risks, Munster from Deepwater Asset Management said there is more time than many believe will adapt due to long-standing customer loyalty.
“This is something that holds existential risks for all of these companies, including Apple, but I don't think we'll be at the breakpoint the following year,” Munster said.
