Bumble adds option to report AI photos and videos

Months after introducing Deception Detector, a filtering tool that uses AI to weed out spam, scams, and fake profiles, dating app Bumble has now announced a way for users to report profiles that appear to be AI-generated.

Some daters are open to using generative AI to write their dating app profiles or even to converse with matches. Earlier this year, Bumble founder and former CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd went a step further, saying that in the future, AI concierges will date us for us.

But when it comes to AI-generated photos and videos, daters aren't so keen. According to a recent Bumble survey obtained by Mashable, 71% of millennial and Gen Z respondents said there should be limits on this type of media on dating apps. Of those, 71% said that using AI-generated material to make it appear as though you're doing something you haven't done or visiting a place you haven't been constitutes catfishing.

Bumble now allows you to report such profiles by scrolling to the bottom and tapping on the “Hide and Report” button. Select the “Fake Profile” option and choose “Uses AI-generated photos and videos” as the reason. You can also provide more details if you wish.

As Mashable previously reported, Deception Detector reduced reports of fake accounts by 45% during testing, so it will be interesting to see how many reports Bumble receives of AI-generated profiles in the future.

“Part of creating a space to make meaningful connections is eliminating elements that are misleading or unsafe, and we're committed to continually improving our technology to ensure Bumble is a safe and trusted dating environment,” Bumble VP of product Lisa Stein said in a press release. “By introducing this new reporting option, we can better understand how bad actors and fake profiles are misusing our AI so our community can feel safer when making connections.”
