Sixth Annual Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Index Finds Cloud Smart Infrastructure Modernization is Accelerating Australia's AI and Sustainability Agenda
Sydney – 26 June 2024: Australian enterprises are far ahead of their global peers in modernizing their infrastructure, with the nation's hybrid multicloud transition underway, driven primarily by AI and sustainability goals. These are some of the key findings for Australia in the sixth annual Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Index, released today.
The ability to support AI has a sizeable influence on the infrastructure choices made by Australian organisations, with 44% of respondents citing it as a key driver, compared to 35% of global respondents.
According to the survey, this appetite for AI has led 99% of Australian respondents to adopt a “cloud-smart” infrastructure strategy that leverages the best environment for each workload’s unique requirements – be it private datacenter, public cloud or edge – compared to 90% globally.
Aaron White, general manager and vice president, Nutanix APJ, said this year's survey results revealed that Australian organisations were leading the way when it came to adopting AI into their businesses.
“It's clear that interest in AI is no longer driven by FOMO or hype as Australian businesses are wasting no time in preparing their businesses for the AI era,” White said. “To the casual observer familiar with ChatGPT, it may seem like 'AI' is simply a website to visit, but there's a lot of work that businesses need to do to become AI-ready, starting from the infrastructure level.”
The “cloud smart” approach is taking hold in Australia, with 90% of respondents globally saying they had migrated applications from one environment to another in the past year.
When asked about the primary reason for migrating applications between environments, Australia's AI ambitions were again apparent: More than half (58%) of local respondents said they migrated applications to integrate with cloud-native services such as AI and ML, making this the top driver among Australian businesses. In comparison, only 40% of global respondents said they migrated applications to integrate with such services.
“Australia ranks first in enterprise AI adoption, likely due to the significant effort that has gone into modernizing its infrastructure,” White said. “Many countries suffer from a technology capabilities gap, but it's more pronounced in Australia. This will provide a strong incentive for AI adoption, hopefully levelling the playing field and making us more competitive on the global stage.”
Other key findings from this year's Australian survey results include:
- We make sustainability a priority. 100% of Australian organizations agreed that sustainability is a priority. Additionally, 45% of Australian respondents said their organization will “significantly increase” investment in sustainability initiatives and technology in 2024. Infrastructure modernization and remote working were the top two sustainability initiatives focused on by both Australian and global respondents. However, unlike the global average, far more Australian organizations reported “increasing their use of renewable energy sources” in the past year (52% vs. 39%).
- A massive shift to hybrid multicloud is underway. All regions around the world are expected to see a similar decline in the percentage of on-premise data centre, private cloud and hybrid cloud models deployed over the next few years. In Australia, the percentage of hybrid multi-cloud IT models is expected to grow significantly from 14% today to 55% over the next one to three years.
- Ransomware continues to keep businesses up at night despite advances: Australian organizations are significantly more likely than the global average to report that they were able to fully restore operations within just a few hours of a ransomware attack (41% vs. 29%). Despite this above-average result, 100% of Australian respondents agree that their organization could improve its ransomware defense posture. Additionally, 90% of Australian respondents believe ransomware and malware defense remains a “significant to moderate challenge” for their organization to manage.
Vanson Bourne conducted the research on behalf of Nutanix for the sixth consecutive year, surveying 1,500 IT and DevOps/platform engineering decision makers globally in December 2023. Respondents spanned a range of industries, company sizes and geographies, including North America, South America, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region.
