The applications of generative AI are virtually limitless. Tools like ChatGPT can be used to write emails, write code, and solve all kinds of problems in professional contexts. They can also be extremely useful for personal use, like planning a vacation or weekend getaway. AI tools can help you find great restaurants, flight connections, and even plan your entire trip itinerary.
As with all applications of AI tools, using them as personal travel assistants is still in its infancy, and many people probably don't even know what AI can do in the travel space. According to Deloitte's Summer 2024 Travel Survey, only 10% of Americans planning their summer vacations this year plan to use AI tools for inspiration and information about their upcoming trips. AI use is most prevalent among millennials, with 17% of travelers using ChatGPT or a similar tool for trip planning.
While inspiration-seeking travelers rarely use AI tools, the same can't be said for the short-form videos commonly found on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Younger people are especially likely to find inspiration from such videos, according to a Deloitte study: 44% of Gen Z travelers turn to videos on social media for travel inspiration, which isn't all that surprising given TikTok's popularity with this age group.
