- Katy Perry was incorrectly depicted as attending the Met Gala through an AI image on social media.
- The AI image also made it appear as if Rihanna was there even though she was home with the flu.
- Welcome to the year of half-baked deepfakes.
Katy Perry didn't wear a gorgeous deep-V dress with moss fabric at the end, nor did she wear a tight corset dress at the Met Gala on Monday.
However, images of both looks went viral on social media, and Perry's mother congratulated her in an email saying she looked like a “Rose Parade” in the gown.
Perry was nowhere to be seen at the star-studded Fifth Avenue event, which he has attended on and off since 2009. After this year's images started gaining traction on social media, she posted a video from the studio wearing a tight, leathery outfit.
Perry's mother, and many others like her who watched the event on social media, were captivated by the images, which appear to have been created using generative artificial intelligence. The singer highlighted her fake photo and her mother's disbelief in her Instagram post on Monday. The post comes a month after Perry, along with more than 200 other artists, called on technology companies and developers to stop using AI tools on behalf of songwriters and artists.
This year saw generative AI-powered deepfakes go mainstream, from robocalls imitating President Joe Biden to blatantly fake photos of Taylor Swift. U.S. federal law does not prohibit deepfakes, or media such as photos, videos, or audio that depict people doing or saying things they did not actually do. The Federal Communications Commission has banned AI-generated voices in robocalls, and some states have banned deepfake pornography.
Perry wasn't the only celebrity to be deepfaked at the Met Gala.small twitter account I posted an image It looks like longtime Met queen Rihanna smiling from the gala carpet in a forest gown with a flared top.
Like Perry, Rihanna was sick with the flu and did not attend the event, her rep said. And like Perry's image, Rihanna's fake photo shows a different carpet than the actual cream and blue Met Gala floor, a clear sign of AI intervention.
Perry and Rihanna have a lighthearted image. But deepfakes pose a real threat to voters and ordinary people caught up in situations involving malicious actors, such as romance scams or workplace disputes.
