Oracle announced plans for an AI-powered service that will enable developers to rapidly program apps based on Java, SQL, and Oracle Cloud infrastructure. Once released, Oracle Code Assist will join a small but growing number of similar services, including GitHub Copilot and Amazon CodeWhisperer, aimed at accelerating the app development lifecycle. However, Oracle did not say when this feature would be released, only saying that it would be available “in the future.”

Oracle boasts that Code Assist has multiple features. From providing code suggestions based on the context and patterns you've learned, to generating API documentation and providing annotations to explain code functionality, summarizing your code in an easy-to-understand way, and running pull requests to merge your changes into your repository. Up to, of course, create code reviews and run unit and functional tests on your code to help developers improve the quality of their work.
Once released, Oracle's AI tools will be available as development environment plugins for JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA or Microsoft Visual Studio Code. It's also designed to provide “unique feedback from experts to help developers build, optimize, and upgrade their applications, no matter where they run.”

The company emphasizes that Code Assist is optimized for Java and SQL, two programming languages commonly used to create enterprise apps. The former is particularly noteworthy since Oracle is the primary developer and administrator. Why not? If you're looking to make app development on your platform faster and easier by providing an AI-powered coding assistant, why not let that assistant help you understand how other programs run on Oracle's systems? Is not it.
Beyond Java and SQL, Code Assist is fine-tuned using Oracle's Cloud Infrastructure and NetSuite's SuiteScript.
One might wonder who would use this tool, especially in a marketplace that includes GitHub, Amazon, and startups Augment, Tabnine, Blackbox, and Cognition. But offering apps native to a platform that is a leader in enterprise apps can be a selling point, especially when it comes to resiliency, compliance, and data security. Also, although it's not explicitly stated, Oracle has already been vetted by the team, so it's safe to assume that developers in professional and regulated industries might find Code Assist appealing. is not difficult.
Additionally, developers can choose to use multiple code assistants. Perhaps you can start with GitHub Copilot or a similar product and then import your code into Oracle Code Assist to complete it as you get closer to release.

The announcement of Code Assist comes weeks after Oracle announced more than a dozen generative AI capabilities for its Fusion Cloud family of applications.
