Apple has finally taken action to remove at least three apps from the App Store that use artificial intelligence, or AI, to generate non-consensual nude images.

As reported by 404 Media, these apps are being promoted on Instagram, which violates Instagram's policies.

The report highlights that Apple removed these apps after multiple users reported them and shared links to those apps and their corresponding ads. . This is one of the rare instances where Apple has relied on outside help to identify apps that violate App Store policies.

404 Media's investigation revealed five such ads in Meta's ad library, where all ads on the platform are archived. Two of these ads were for web-based services that offer similar functionality, while three directed users to apps available in the Apple App Store.

Some of these apps promise features like face-swapping for adult images, while others are marketed as “undressing” apps that use AI to digitally remove clothing from photos. did.

Meta removed the ads as soon as it discovered them, but when we contacted Apple, they initially declined to comment and then asked for more details after this article was published last week.

This is not the first time concerns have been raised about AI-powered deepfake apps on the App Store.

In 2022, similar apps were discovered on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, but neither company took immediate action to remove them. Instead, it asked developers to stop advertising such features on popular adult websites.

In recent months, undressing apps have become rampant in schools and universities around the world.

Some of these apps are distributed directly, while others offer functionality through subscription services. This trend highlights the importance of close monitoring by technology companies to prevent the spread of harmful and unethical applications.
