Meta has announced a number of new updates to its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. CEO Mark Zuckerberg released an Instagram Reel showing off the glasses' new cat-eye frame style and video calling capabilities. You can also now connect your glasses to Apple Music. And last but not least, the multimodal AI assistant will be available to everyone in the US and Canada.
Zuckerberg's Reel provides a very clear demonstration of the video calling feature. In it, he talks to Instagram fashion expert Eva Chen about his new Skyler frame, chain length and more. New colors will also be added to existing Wayfarer and Headliner models. The headliner with round lenses also provides a low bridge fit for those who have problems with their glasses sliding off their face.
When it comes to video calling, you can call your friends and family via both WhatsApp and Messenger. However, Meta's blog states that this feature will be rolled out in stages, so you may not see it right away.
Another feature not mentioned in the blog is compatibility with Apple Music. But the feature debuted this morning in the Meta View app, which pairs with glasses. The instructions say you can use Apple Music hands-free to play any song, playlist, station, or artist. You can also request recommendations based on your viewing history.
Finally, Meta launched an early access program for multimodal AI in December. Starting today, the beta version is open to everyone who owns the glasses in the United States and Canada. This feature allows you to take a photo using your glasses and let Meta's AI provide more context. For example, you'll be able to ask them to identify plant types, write Instagram captions, or translate signs written in a foreign language.
