In this week’s ClimateCast, Tom Heap embarks on a journey to explore how artificial intelligence can provide valuable insight into the lives of vulnerable seabirds, especially puffins.
He visits the Isle of May, off the coast of Scotland. It is home to 46,000 pairs of puffins, many other seabirds, four human researchers, and two surveillance cameras now supported by AI.
So he spoke to Musidora Jorgensen, Chief Sustainability Officer at Microsoft UK, and Martyn O’Neill, project manager at SSE, which has developed a system that learns to identify individual birds using facial recognition. Listen.
