Singapore General Hospital has introduced a predictive AI tool to help check a patient’s suitability for surgery.
Called CARES-ML (Composite Assessment of Surgical Risks and Machine Learning), this predictive tool uses patient history, physical status classifications, and research test results such as X-rays and blood tests to predict surgical risks. Generate reports and scores. The in-hospital test achieved greater than 90% accuracy in predicting surgical risk.
This tool is based on the CARES calculation tool developed by SGH in 2018. It has since been refined and validated on a local dataset of nearly 100,000 surgical patients from 2015 to 2022.

According to SGH, CARES-ML can be used to improve preoperative assessment. “CARES-ML enhances the assessment of each patient by anesthesiologists and surgeons and enhances clinical team decision-making and recommendations regarding patient perioperative care planning, which ultimately improves patient outcomes. The SGH research team is currently working on extending the AI model to also predict patient length of stay and risk of pneumonia and stroke.
