GST fake registration drives: 11,140 fake registrations detected. FM

Smt. India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a review meeting on continued efforts to counter false claims for GST avoidance. The meeting was attended by Revenue Secretary Sri Sanjay Malhotra and CBIC Chairman Sri Vivek Johri. FM was briefed on the actions taken against false registrations.

The Finance Minister was informed that 11,140 such registrations had already been detected and action had been initiated against them. FM learned that techniques such as identity theft were employed.

She highlighted the ministry’s existing efforts, such as OTP-based Aadhar authentication and testing of biometric-based Aadhar authentication at enrollment in high-risk cases. RS and her CBIC chairman told FM that AI/ML techniques are being used extensively to identify potential fake networks.

Additionally, she directed the GST registration process to be further strengthened with the use of technology to prevent such bogus entities from entering the GST ecosystem. FM has proposed a nationwide campaign to communicate special promotional goals to eliminate fake groups.
