Students will join a research team in the Privacy@Edge project to tackle the problem of privacy preference recommender systems using federated learning at the network edge. The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and is being pursued in collaboration with leading Norwegian research organizations SINTEF Digital, NTNU and several industrial partners.
As PhDs, our team of students will work to develop innovative federated learning techniques at the edge of the network to address the problem of recommendation systems regarding privacy settings for individual users. This is an important area of research as users increasingly demand personalized recommendations while demanding respect for their privacy. Work on cutting-edge machine learning and privacy research and have the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers in the field. PhD candidates will be affiliated with IoT@NTNU and the Open AI Lab in Norway and will have the opportunity to collaborate with research scientists from international partner institutions.

- Submit an application for admission and a research plan within three months of joining the company.
- You will take the required courses (30 ECTS) as part of your doctoral programme.

Required selection criteria
- Must have a professional background in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or other related field.
- Your education should be equivalent to a 5-year Norwegian degree program with 120 credits at master’s level.
- A high academic background from previous academic work and an average grade (B or above on the NTNU grading scale) from a master’s degree or equivalent education is required. If you haven’t done well in previous studies, you need an equally good academic foundation. If you are less educated, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for doctoral education.
- You should have a strong mathematical background and a research-oriented master’s thesis in a related field (signal processing, statistical machine learning, applied mathematics, etc.).
- Good experience in programming (preferably Matlab and/or Python) is required.

salary and conditions
PhD candidates (code 1017) are normally paid from a gross annual salary of NOK 532,200 before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. 2% is deducted from your salary as a contribution to the Norwegian Civil Service Pension Fund.
Employment period is 4 years (teaching rate 25%).
PhD Appointment This position requires a PhD. Must complete a program in electronic telecommunications within three months of employment and participate in an organized doctoral program during the period of employment.
This agreement is subject to current regulations relating to national civil servants and civil servants, as well as laws relating to export control of strategic goods, services and technology. Candidates who, upon examination of the application and supporting documentation, are found to be in conflict with the criteria of the latter law, will be barred from being recruited by NTNU.
After appointment, it should be assumed that there may be changes in the field of work.
Daily attendance and access to the facility is a prerequisite.
