Samsung Electronics shares rose on Tuesday after the company announced it would create a robotics division as the South Korean technology giant seeks new sources of growth.
The newly created RX (Robotics eXperience) aims to integrate Samsung’s robotics capabilities and drive medium- to long-term strategies from core technology development to commercialization, the company said in an emailed statement. CEO TM Roh will directly oversee this division.
Samsung rose 6.76%, and the benchmark Kospi index rose about 4%.
Entity Creation highlights our foray into physical AI. President Roh said at a public conference in Jinju earlier this month that Samsung Electronics plans to invest about 60 trillion won ($40.7 billion) in the Yeongnam region, including the Gumi plant. This comes after Samsung upped its stake in local company Rainbow Robotics to become its largest shareholder in late 2024.
Of the total amount, 19 trillion won will be designated for Gumi to develop physical AI infrastructure and humanoid robot manufacturing facilities in partnership with Samsung SDS.
The new division aims to establish research centers in the United States, China and Japan.
