New York is the first state in the country to ban the use of AI-enabled smart glasses and other recording eyewear in all state courts.
According to reports National law reviewthe new policy reflects growing concerns about the ability of these devices to discreetly capture audio, video, photos, and AI-generated transcripts.
The ban applies to more than 1,200 state, county, city, town and village courts in the state, the publication said.
“This prohibition applies to all individuals entering court facilities, including litigants, attorneys, witnesses, family members, UCS employees, and all other individuals who seek to enter UCS facilities for any reason.”
The court system explained that AI-enabled smart glasses pose unique challenges because they can record minutes, conversations, and participants without being immediately visible to others.
National law review The state-wide rule strengthens existing prohibitions on unauthorized recording within court facilities and is intended to protect the integrity of judicial proceedings, confidential communications and courthouse security, it said.
Those wearing prescription smart glasses were expected to bring their traditional prescription glasses if they needed to enter the courthouse.
