Securing application networks in a post-AI world

Applications of AI

AI has become a double-edged sword for enterprises, increasing the pace and scale of cyberattacks as well as speeding up the delivery of enterprise applications, potentially increasing cyber risks.

This is according to Justin Berman, Regional Sales Engineer at AlgoSec, which has established itself as a leader in application connectivity and network security management, and is distributed exclusively in the Southern Africa region by Solid8 Technologies.

A key new security challenge facing enterprises is AI-powered attacks, Berman said. “One example is Mythos AI, Anthropic’s advanced frontier AI model known for its superior superhuman capabilities in cyber security and vulnerability discovery. It has demonstrated unprecedented autonomous coding and offensive cyber attack capabilities. It discovers new ways to conduct attacks and finds old attack vectors with incredible speed. “This translates into a much faster time for teams to identify and fix issues,” he says.

At the same time, organizations are developing and launching applications faster with the help of AI. Applications are at the core of digital transformation, says Berman. “They offer more ways to connect or buy, enable businesses to improve efficiency and offer new products and services, and help them stay competitive.

“Many companies are starting to deploy AI even though they do not fully understand the risks associated with AI. For example, fintech startups and small banks across Africa may be deploying AI to roll out products and services faster, but without the appropriate level of security in place,” he added.

Berman emphasizes that the situation is further complicated by public services, open APIs, overly permissive firewall rules, and outdated access, which can create vulnerabilities that are often overlooked.

He notes that managing application connectivity across hybrid environments is becoming increasingly complex for large organizations with a growing number of interconnected disparate systems and increased compliance requirements adding to the challenge.

“Organizations need to address these issues on multiple fronts: They need to find and reduce attack vectors, stop dangerous changes before production, manage application connectivity, clean up stale permissive access, secure cloud-native delivery, and create audit-ready evidence for compliance reporting,” he says.

Berman acknowledges that AlgoSec has a very clear purpose: to take away the pain associated with managing the security of hybrid networks (defined as IT infrastructure that combines two or more different types of networking technologies, topologies, or computing environments). “We use AI to simplify application connectivity security to address all of these complexities. AlgoSec has evolved its application-centric security platform by incorporating AI to simplify application discovery, connectivity analysis, risk prioritization, and policy management.

“We use AI to identify the flows that belong to an application, understand how systems and applications interconnect, and overcome the challenges of fragmented visibility. AI automatically discovers applications, correlates connectivity across fragmented environments, and helps prioritize remediation based on business context.”

“We also use AI to ingest data from a variety of sources to better understand risk and translate that into compliance prioritization. We ensure that everything that was done in the past was compliant, and we continue to remain compliant as our customers move forward and quickly implement and make changes.”

AlgoSec Horizon is an AI-powered application-centric security management platform that enables organizations to discover applications, understand connections, reduce attack paths, and automate security policy management across hybrid environments.

“AlgoSec’s AppViz enables application-centric visibility and control, business-driven risk and compliance prioritization, and AI-driven application changes across hybrid networks,” said Berman.

AlgoSec is trusted by South African utilities and businesses in the banking, fintech, healthcare, retail and education sectors.

AlgoSec, in partnership with Solid8 Technologies, will host an Algo Safari customer and partner event in Johannesburg on the 28th. Cape Town in July and 31stIn July, we will give our customers and partners the opportunity to see the capabilities of Horizon and AppViz in action.
