RIYADH: Saudi Arabia reaffirmed the importance of strengthening international cooperation to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence and harness its potential to advance sustainable development.
Saudi Arabia issued the statement on behalf of the Arab Group during an interactive dialogue with the co-chairs of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In a statement by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Abdulaziz Alwasir, the Kingdom welcomed efforts to implement the Global Digital Compact and establish an independent commission on AI.
He also stressed the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between governments, the United Nations, the private sector, academic institutions and civil society, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.
Saudi Arabia stressed that Member States should play a central role in future AI governance mechanisms, respecting each country’s sovereignty to formulate national policies in line with its development priorities and needs.
The Saudi envoy also emphasized the importance of developing an ethical framework for the responsible use of AI based on transparency, trustworthiness and accountability, while protecting privacy and human rights and taking into account cultural and societal values.
Saudi Arabia emphasized the need to address risks arising from the misuse of AI technologies, including misinformation, deepfakes, and cyber-attacks, to strengthen public trust and promote its safe and beneficial use around the world.
