AI company Midjourney launches medical venture focused on ultrasound imaging

AI News

Midjourney, best known for its artificial intelligence (AI) image generation devices, has announced a new venture focused on healthcare with a focus on whole-body ultrasound scans.

The initiative, called Midjourney Medical, includes its first hardware product, the Midjourney Scanner. This is a whole-body imaging system designed to create detailed three-dimensional (3D) views of a person’s internal anatomy using ultrasound technology.

According to a recent blog post by Midjourney, the scanner uses dozens of ultrasound imaging modules arranged within a ring-shaped structure. Users stand on a platform that descends underwater, and thousands of sensors emit ultrasound waves from multiple angles. The system then analyzes how those waves travel through the body and generates images of muscles, fat, bones, and organs, creating a three-dimensional map of the body in about a minute.

The company plans to open a purpose-built facility in San Francisco’s Union Square, known as Midjourney Spa, by the end of 2027. The facility will include multiple scanning rooms, as well as fitness and wellness facilities including a gym, sauna, and cold immersion pool.

Midjourney said the technology could eventually achieve image quality comparable to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in certain applications.

The company added that some future uses of the scanner will require approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. For now, the company is focused on generating what it calls “body composition maps,” which it says have fewer regulatory requirements than diagnostic imaging systems.
