OrcaRouter announced the release of Routing DSL, a programmable routing framework that gives developers full control over how AI requests are evaluated, routed, combined, and optimized between models.
Unlike static model selection, a routing DSL allows teams to define routing logic using simple YAML and CEL expressions, allowing them to dynamically select models based on prompt complexity, task type, latency requirements, cost objectives, safety policies, and custom business rules.
Routing DSL allows developers to build advanced routing strategies such as:
- Route simple requests to an efficient open source model
- Escalating difficult prompts to frontier models
- Run multiple models in parallel and merge results
- Configure fallback chains and reliability policies
- Apply guardrails and governance rules before execution
- Optimize for cost, quality, latency, or custom goals.
The routing DSL is built directly into OrcaRouter’s AI gateway and works across over 200 leading AI models through a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

Fable 5 class intelligence with programmable routing
Initial internal evaluation shows that a carefully designed routing DSL strategy can achieve performance comparable to frontier models such as Claude Fable 5 while significantly reducing inference costs.
Rather than relying on a single expensive model for each request, a routing DSL allows developers to combine specialized models and parallel execution strategies to allocate compute only when it yields measurable quality improvements.
The result is a new approach to AI infrastructure.
Increasing intelligence through orchestration, not just large-scale models.
A new layer in the AI stack
As AI systems become more agentic, routing decisions are evolving from simple model selection to a core part of application logic.
Routing DSLs introduce a programmable control plane for AI workloads, allowing teams to express how they assemble, manage, and optimize intelligence in production.
OrcaRouter’s adaptive routing engine, observability platform, guardrails, governance controls, and agent firewall combined with a routing DSL provides organizations with an integrated way to build reliable and cost-effective AI systems at scale.
