Police have launched a criminal investigation into an officer for allegedly using an artificial intelligence (AI) system to “create evidence in a number of cases.”
The Derbyshire Police officer has been removed from frontline duty pending the outcome of the investigation, the force said.
According to police, the officer is suspected of perverting the course of justice, but no arrests have been made.
A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service said it was cooperating with police, adding: “We are liaising with the defense team and the courts in the appropriate case.”
It added: “As the police investigation continues, it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
Derbyshire Police said: “A criminal investigation has been launched into suspicion of perverting the course of justice after officers allegedly used an AI system to produce evidence in a number of cases.”
“Police are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service on any cases that may affect them, but as the investigation is at an early stage no further details are available.
“The officers involved have been removed from front-line duty pending the outcome of the investigation. No arrests have been made.”
This comes in the same week that a new national center for AI in policing, called PoliceAI, was established.
“Crime and technology are evolving rapidly,” PoliceAI Interim Director Alex Murray said at Wednesday’s launch.
“Police must keep pace by responsibly deploying AI to catch criminals and keep people safe.”
