Director Martin Scorsese will partner with artificial intelligence company Black Forest Labs and serve as an advisor to the institute.
The Academy Award winner said in a statement released Tuesday that it leverages the company’s FLUX technology to help create storyboards.
“For 70 years, I’ve been creating storyboards myself. There’s always been the question of how to convey what I saw in my head to the cast and crew. There are some things you have to see and feel. I’m interested in the intersection of technology and storytelling, and how it can push the boundaries of creativity to create a deeper, richer experience for the audience,” Scorsese said. “Remember, film is a young medium, only 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it evolves.”

However, some artists were quick to criticize the move. Concept artist and illustrator Carla Ortiz wrote to X, “He threw every storyboard artist he ever worked with under the bus and destroyed their livelihoods by using models that would have been trained on the same storyboard artists’ work.”
Director and animator Sam Dietz also had some sharp words to say about the film. goodfellas director. “It literally takes me seconds to storyboard a shot. There is absolutely no reason why you would need an AI built on the stolen work of millions of artists to storyboard your vision, take a hell of a lot of pride, and respect your peers,” he posted.
Black Forest has released a video in which director Scorsese utilizes an AI platform to assist in the storyboarding process. He said, “With a tool like this, you can get up to speed much faster, saving production time and reducing worker wear and tear.”
With his new role as an advisor to Black Forest Labs, Scorsese has become one of the most prolific Hollywood directors to voice his support for AI. avatar Helmer James Cameron joined the board of AI company Stability AI last September, while Guillermo del Toro said: hollywood reporter “I don’t think anyone wants this,” he said in October when asked about his thoughts on AI permeating the creative space.
