On June 2, the White House issued an executive order regarding cybersecurity initiatives related to artificial intelligence. The order directs federal agencies to issue directives and guidance within 30 days that focus on protecting civilian federal information systems. Establish or expand federal programs and cybersecurity services that enhance AI-enabled defensive tools. Facilitates access to cybersecurity tools and services, including targeted frontier models for critical infrastructure operators such as government agencies, state and local governments, rural hospitals, community banks, and local governments. The order also directs federal agencies to create an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse to coordinate and solve the problem of scanning for software vulnerabilities, discover and verify such vulnerabilities, and coordinate and prioritize the distribution of remediation and vulnerability patches. Additionally, the order directs federal agencies to determine the threshold for designating an AI model as a “covered frontier model.” The EO also directs the Attorney General to prioritize criminal enforcement against parties who use AI to unlawfully access or damage computers without authorization, or who utilize AI while engaging in such unlawful access in furtherance of other crimes.
