Ariana Grande has released the video for her latest single “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” a horror-inspired visual co-starring actor Justin Long.
The video was directed by Christian Breslauer, who last year shot the short film “Brighter Days Ahead,” which will appear on the singer’s 2024 album “Eternal Sunshine.”
Spielberg’s go-to cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski, shot the video. The video begins with Long burying Grande in a bunker filled with stacks of black-and-white composition notebooks in which she wrote about her “anxieties.”
‘Hate That I Made You Love Me’, released as a single on Friday, marks the beginning of a new era for the singer ahead of her eighth studio album, ‘Petal’. The project, scheduled for release on July 31 via Republic Records, was executive produced and co-written by Grande and Ilya. Grande and Elijah have been collaborating with her since the days of ‘Dangerous Woman’ and most recently worked together on her 2024 album ‘Eternal Sunshine’. Max Martin is also credited as a co-writer and producer on the new single, alongside Grande and Ilya.
Grande announced Petal in late April, calling the album “full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and defiant.” Some are already interpreting “Hate That I Made You Love Me” as a breakup song or a message about how people perceive her.
The singer is currently preparing for her “Eternal Sunshine” tour, which kicks off June 6th at Oakland Arena in Oakland. The trek was initially pegged to her 2024 album and its deluxe edition, Brighter Days Ahead, but will likely incorporate new music from the Petal era.
This may also be one of the last tours she does in the near future, as she recently said on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, “I don’t want to be definitive, but…I know I’m really excited to do this little tour, but I’m thinking it might not happen again for a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time.”
