Nvidia (NVDA.O) has launched a new chip that puts AI capabilities directly into laptops and desktop computers, competing with the likes of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), Intel (INTC.O) and Apple (AAPL.O).
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who is in Taiwan for the Computex conference, said on Monday that the RTX Spark PC chip is part of Nvidia’s efforts with Microsoft (MSFT.O) to “reinvent the PC” for the AI era, after three years of collaboration between the two companies.
Industry experts say the chip will overhaul the way we interact with AI, and is designed to run AI agents locally rather than relying solely on cloud computing.
Huang said NVIDIA developed the RTX Spark chip with support from Taiwan’s MediaTek (2454.TW).
“RTX Spark aims to transform traditional app-centric PCs into truly useful Agentic AI personal computers that will eventually find their way into every home in the coming years as private edge AI agents become important,” said Neil Shah, co-founder of Counterpoint Research .
“This will be an ‘RTX Spark’ moment for personal computing, just like iPhone, ChatGPT, and DeepSeek were.”
The new chips and Nvidia’s Vera central processing units highlight the company’s increasing focus on PC and CPU products, and Huang spent much of his keynote highlighting RTX Spark chips and Vera CPUs.
Vera CPUs are designed for AI agents, and early adopters include OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceX and more, according to the president of the $5 trillion chip company. He took to the stage wearing his signature black leather jacket.
Shares of AMD and Intel fell nearly 4% in premarket U.S. trading, Qualcomm (QCOM.O) fell almost 7% and Apple fell 0.6%. Microsoft also rose 3.1% as software stocks rebounded.
Huang was speaking ahead of Computex, a gathering of leaders from the world’s largest technology companies.
Nvidia’s highlights about AI agents running locally on PC hardware echo comments made by Qualcomm (QCOM.O) CEO Cristiano Amon, who also spoke ahead of Computex and positioned 2026 as a tipping point for agent AI.
“Two years ago, we talked about how AI would change the human-computer interface and, as a result, the architecture of every personal computing device. And that’s starting to become a reality in 2026. That’s why we’re calling 2026 the year of the agent,” he said, adding that the industry is moving beyond AI as a simple instant-response tool to fully autonomous agents.
Amon said the move to agent AI makes local edge computing inevitable because today’s device architectures are not built for always-on, autonomous operation.
“All of these devices today are built for actions initiated by users, not agents,” he said.
Huang said on an earnings call in May that Nvidia’s new Vera central processors will give it access to a new $200 billion market.
“This (Vera CPU) will be our new major growth driver,” Huang said in a lengthy speech outlining Nvidia’s latest AI products and highlighting the island’s central role in the global technology industry.
Huang dismissed concerns that AI would reduce the demand for software engineers as “complete nonsense,” arguing instead that the technology would promote employment by making workers more productive.
“This is the promise of AI. The number of engineers, software engineers, is actually increasing. People talk about AI eliminating jobs, which is complete nonsense. Because of that, more software engineers will be hired.”
Mr. Huang, who was born in the southern city of Tainan, last week announced plans to invest about $150 billion a year in Taiwan, calling it the center of the AI revolution.
The speech at Taipei Music Hall came about two weeks after he accompanied US President Donald Trump to Beijing as part of a high-powered business delegation to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The Computex trade show will be held from June 2nd to 5th.
