As more and more AI-generated videos flood its platform, YouTube announced Wednesday that it will improve the way it notifies viewers that they’re watching AI-generated content and introduce automatic detection to help label it.
The Google-owned service, which started labeling AI-generated videos two years ago, said that labeling and displaying them has become “simpler and more intuitive” for both viewers and those uploading videos. Rene Ritchie, YouTube’s head of editorial and creator liaison, said in a video explaining the changes that the goal is to “get context at a glance.”
For long-form videos that use AI to produce photorealistic results or are “substantially modified or generated by AI,” a label indicating the AI content will appear below the video player and above the video description. For short videos, which are becoming increasingly popular on the platform, labels appear as an overlay on the video.
Creator disclosure and automatic detection
YouTube already requires users who upload videos to disclose whether the creator used realistic AI to generate the content. But even if creators don’t disclose it, YouTube will now use its own tools to detect that kind of AI use and automatically apply labels.
Creators can try to remove labels if they feel the system is incorrect. However, if the video was created with Google’s own video tools or has metadata indicating the AI that generated it, the label will remain, YouTube said.
Labels do not affect rankings or monetization.
