Australian law firm Thomson Gear has changed its brand name to Thomsons and launched a specialist law firm, Faculty Lawyers.
Adrian Tembel, chief executive partner at Thomsons, said: Asian Business Law Journal Faculti Lawyers says its establishment was driven by rapid technological advances, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI).
Faculti Lawyers is designed for institutional clients managing large portfolios of routine legal work that are highly sensitive to accuracy, speed, and cost. Tembel confirmed that the practice will be run using its own AI platform.
“The legal market is rapidly changing with the advancement and introduction of new technologies, particularly AI,” he said. “This means we need to focus on communicating value to our clients like never before.
“The launch of Faculty Lawyers and the technology behind it further strengthens that focus and ensures we continue to transform our value proposition at the fastest possible speed.”
Tembel said Faculty Lawyers would “retain its existing management team, with a total staff of approximately 114 people” and focus on four main business areas: banking, real estate, insurance and aged care.
The rebranding to Thomsons took effect on May 25, 2026, but Tembel said it would not affect the company’s broader strategy. He also confirmed the company has no plans to expand beyond Australia and operates six offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.
“This separation will give us a clearer understanding of what each brand does best, with Thomsons serving complex corporate, government and institutional missions, and Faculty Lawyers serving institutional clients and managing a large portfolio of regular law practices,” he said.
