Google wants Android app development to feel like inputting ideas rather than setting up a coding environment. At Google I/O 2026, the company introduced new AI-powered features in Google AI Studio. This feature allows you to convert plain language descriptions into Android applications directly from your web browser.
The new tool is designed to allow users to write what they want to build, and then AI Studio automatically generates the app’s framework, interface, and core functionality. Google says the workflow runs on Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and can also support telephony features such as GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC.

This announcement positions Google AI Studio in the growing category of AI-assisted development platforms focused on accelerating app creation and simplifying workflows. Google positioned this update as a way to help both experienced developers and first-time creators go from idea to working app in fewer steps.
Google also demonstrated how Android applications can be built and tested entirely from the browser environment. AI Studio includes an in-browser Android emulator that allows users to immediately preview and interact with generated apps. The platform also supports Android Debug Bridge integration, allowing developers to send applications directly to Android devices for testing.
For now, Google said these tools are intended for personal utilities, experimental projects, and lightweight social experiences, rather than large-scale public releases. Future updates will include broader sharing options for family and friends.
The company also introduced features that make it easier to move AI-generated applications into testing workflows. AI Studio can automatically create Play Console records, package Android app bundles, and upload builds to internal test tracks, reducing the number of manual steps required for deployment. Developers can also export their projects as zip files and continue working on them in Android Studio or GitHub.
Google said that future updates will add support for Firebase services such as Firestore, Firebase Authentication, and App Check.
Alongside its development tools, the company announced changes focused on AI for app discovery. The new “Ask Play” feature allows users to search for apps using conversational prompts instead of traditional keyword searches. Google also said that Android applications will increasingly appear within Gemini interactions across mobile and web platforms, creating additional discovery paths.
