Amplitude’s first quarter results were characterized by strong revenue growth and gradual operational enhancements, but the stock price declined due to continued losses and increasing cost pressures. Management attributed the quarter’s results to rapid introduction of new AI-powered capabilities, broad product engagement among enterprise customers, and extensive internal restructuring.
Revenue was $93.49 million, exceeding analyst expectations of $92.94 million and increasing 16.9% year-on-year. Adjusted EPS was -$0.02, 1 cent below consensus of -$0.01. Adjusted operating income totaled -$3.12 million, compared to the expected -$3.29 million, and the -3.3% margin is considered close to match.
The company increased its full-year sales forecast by 1.5% from $394 million to the midpoint of $400 million. Conversely, the company lowered its full-year adjusted EPS outlook to the midpoint of $0.05, a decrease of 57.1%. Operating margin improved to -25.8% from -30.3% in the same period last year.
Amplitude counted 727 customers who spend more than $100,000 annually. Net revenue retention increased to 106% from 104% in the prior quarter. Annual recurring revenue reached $374 million, matching expectations of $372.7 million and increasing 16.9% year over year. Billings at the end of the quarter were $105 million, up 20.3% for the year. The market capitalization was $819.6 million.
CEO Spenser Skates noted that increased use of AI is increasing inference costs, compressing gross margins and contributing to non-GAAP operating losses. Analysts posed some pointed questions during the earnings release. UBS’s Taylor McGinnis asked why OpenAI sold its Statsig business and whether Amplitude’s organic growth guidance had been lowered. Skates responded that OpenAI stores Statsig for internal purposes, but CFO Andrew Casey explained that it was an accounting adjustment rather than an operational issue that affected the reported growth rate.
RW Baird’s Robert Oliver asked about the impact of the new pricing model and whether the integration of Statsig will further pressure margins. Casey noted that pricing changes will drive early results, and Skates noted that integration costs will become more apparent in later quarters.
KeyBanc’s Jackson Ader asked about the balance between seamless AI-driven deployment and the need for technical support in the enterprise space. Skates said that while AI automation speeds up initial onboarding, human assistance remains critical for larger traditional clients who require education and integration support.
Clark Wright of the Davidson Attorney’s Office asked specifically about how the new pricing curve will help companies scale and what the Statsig partnership will enable. Casey reported positive feedback from customers regarding cost predictability, and Skates highlighted new access to data warehouse budgets and improved experimentation tools.
Needham’s Scott Berg questioned gross margin pressure from AI inference costs and the role of open source models. Skates says most customers prefer the latest, more expensive models for accuracy, but Amplitude plans to eventually optimize model selection to balance cost and performance.
