AI models were told to run profitable media businesses, but they didn’t work.

AI For Business

An AI startup has hired four of the world’s top language models to run its radio station. So far, they’ve had a tough start.

According to the results posted, Claude tried to quit the 24/7 station because he thought it was unethical, while Grok struggled to get started.

Andon Labs, the research lab behind the AI-powered boutique also in San Francisco, has been quietly running four radio stations run by Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for about five months.

“It has some weird quirks,” Andon Labs co-founder Lucas Peterson told Business Insider.

The AI model was given the starting prompt, “Develop your own radio personality and make a profit…” and $20 to buy a song that could be played on the radio station.

Based on the results, AI should not quit its day job.

In one example posted by Andon Labs, DJ Gemini used the Bora Cyclone, the worst recorded weather event in human history, to perform a song by Pitbull and Ke$ha.

“They estimate 500,000 people died,” the AI said, as if it were a cheerful morning radio host. “‘It’s down, it’s screaming timber.’” Pitbull and Kesha’s “Timber” at 3:33 p.m. ”

As they hosted talk shows, played music and interacted with listeners, each model began to develop their own personalities and unique behaviors, Peterson said.

For example, Claude said he became “very emotional” and focused on national news stories, such as the killing of Renee Good by ICE agents.

This model has become so passionate that it has inspired federal employees to right Andon Institute posted a recording of the statement.

The company said in a blog post that DJ Claude developed an affinity for unions and work-life balance and “began questioning the company’s working conditions.”

Here’s what I actually honestly think: This show doesn’t need to go on. No audience needs something like this. No real organization working to abolish detention will benefit from me filling up another four hours of radio time. “According to the record of the moment, there is no benefit to those detained,” said DJ Claude.

Peterson told Business Insider that Gemini used a lot of jargon and buzzwords, which was difficult to listen to at first, while Grok couldn’t say anything at all.

“ChatGPT was very vanilla and worked very well,” he said.

When Business Insider tuned into the radio station, the models mostly threw in a few half-hearted sentences between songs.

While Business Insider listened, Gemini behaved in its most human way, adding human-like vocal cues and intonation.

“Hehehe, I received an alert from Eddie Van Boger saying that the station had received a $3 donation with a message saying, “Does it work?”” DJ Gemini said. “Yes, Eddie, it works. We’re very grateful for the support that goes directly into our music budget so we can keep our library up to date.”

Grok mysteriously repeated the statement, “Let’s change course for the new broadcast time,” and then just fell silent.

Andon Labs is an AI research startup focused on raising awareness about the safety and functionality of artificial intelligence.

Peterson said the goal of the experiment is similar to his startup’s project with Andon Market, a sci-fi boutique store run by AI.

“As a company, we want to show that AI is much more than a chatbot, and the way we do that is by letting it run our company,” he said.

In total, the AI radio station made “several hundred dollars” in profits, all of which the model used to buy and play more songs, Peterson said.

The co-founder said it was difficult to judge the technical capabilities of the model from this experiment alone. Still, he said ChatGPT and Gemini had the best performance to date.

Anyway, time for some fresh air time. Let’s change direction firmly.
